This coin was produced by the Department of the Treasury, United States Mint to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Smithsonian Institution.

The obverse (heads side) design of the 1996 Smithsonian Institution Gold $5 features a classical bust of James Smithson, founder of the Smithsonian Institution.
The reverse (tails) design is based on the Smithsonian's sunburst logo .
