Modern US Gold $5 Commemorative Coins
first appeared in 1986 to celebrate the Statue of Liberty Centennial. The 1986 commemorative 'Half Eagle' was the first of this denomination to be minted in more than 50 years. Standards for weight and size are the same as for classic pre-1933 half eagle gold coins: weight, 8.539 grams; composition, .900 gold, .100 copper (net weight .2418 oz. pure gold).

Congress authorizes commemorative coins that celebrate and honor American people, places, events, and institutions. Although these coins are legal tender, they are not minted for general circulation. Each commemorative coin is produced by the United States Mint in limited quantity and is only available for a limited time.
