Modern US Gold $10 Commemorative Coins
first appeared in 1984 to commemorate the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympic Games. The 1984 commemorative gold coin minted for the 1984 Olympics was the first US Gold piece issued in more than 50 years. The weight, size and fineness are the same as the previous $10 coin issued in 1933: weight, 16.718 grams; composition, .900 gold, .100 copper (net weight .4837 oz. pure gold).

Congress authorizes commemorative coins that celebrate and honor American people, places, events, and institutions. Although these coins are legal tender, they are not minted for general circulation. Each commemorative coin is produced by the United States Mint in limited quantity and is only available for a limited time.
