Description
2024 Australia Silver Piedfort Next Generation Series - Emu (10 oz) $10
Brilliant Uncirculated
Next Generation Series coins display both a mother and baby of iconic wildlife in the Australian Outback. The first issue in the series showcased a pair of koalas, then crocodiles, kookaburras, platypus, dingos, kangaroos and now emus. Each Next Generation coin features micro-engraved radial lines for enhanced aesthetics and security.
Coin Design
The coin's reverse depicts an adult emu striding proudly with three chicks. The design also includes radial lines and The Perth Mint's "P125" mintmark to signify The Perth Mint's 125th anniversary. The obverse features the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III with inscriptions CHARLES III, AUSTRALIA, 10oz, 9999 Ag and 10 DOLLARS.
The coins weigh ten-ounces, struck as a piedfort. The word may be new to many, but piedforts have been struck for over half a millennium. During the Middle Ages, France and Great Britain minted coins of double thickness and weight for presentation purposes. The word "piedfort" literally translates to "heavy foot" in French; it alludes the coin's extra weight and metal content. While piedforts have existed for years, this is the first time the Perth Mint has issued a silver bullion coin in this special format.
