The highest mountain in the world was unknown to the Western world until 1852, when surveyors discovered it while mapping India. It not only triggers an incredible attraction among alpinists. Before the British Mount Everest expedition of 1953, about 10 expeditions had failed on the mountain since 1921. The incredible triumph of the successful first ascent of Mount Everest can be attributed to Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, who reached the highest peak in the world on May 29, 1953.
Coin Design
The reverse features a high relief image of Mount Everest with inscriptions MT EVERSET, 1953 and FIRST ASCENT.
The obverse features the two world-famous alpinists with important information on the edge of the coin. The coin also carries Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, COOK ISLANDS, 100 DOLLARS and 2023.
