Description
2008-W American Gold Buffalo (1 oz) $50 - Uncirculated Collectors Burnished Coin
Certified NGC MS70 - NGC Large Label
Uncirculated Collectors Burnished Coins
In 2008, the United States Mint offered a collectible, uncirculated version of the American Gold Buffalo Coins. They carried the same stunning designs found on their Proof counterparts but only were only minted for one year.
The term "uncirculated" refers to the specialized minting process used to create these coins. Although they are similar in appearance to American Buffalo Bullion Coins, these uncirculated coins are distinguished by the presence of a mint mark, indicating their production facility, and by the use of burnished coin blanks, which are hand-fed into specially-adapted coining presses one at a time.
American Gold Buffalos are a relatively young coin, first minted by the United States in 2006. Created to compete with international bullion of higher purity, Buffalos are .9999 (24 carat) bullion, as opposed to America's pre-existing Gold Eagle at 91.67% (22 carat). Fractional varieties were made in 2008, but all other years have stuck to a standard 1 ounce piece with $50 face value. The design is a rendition of the classic U.S. Buffalo Nickel, with Indian head profile on the obverse and American Bison on the reverse.
