The United States Mint certifies that this coin is a genuine 2001 American Buffalo Commemorative Uncirculated Silver Dollar, struck in accordance with legislation passed by Congress and signed by the President on October 27, 2000, as Public Law 106-375, cited as the "American Buffalo Coin Act of 2000." This coin was produced by the Department of the Treasury, United States Mint to commemorate the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian established by an act of Congress in 1989, in Public Law 101-185.

The obverse (heads side) design of the 2001 American Buffalo portrays a profile representation of a Native American and is based on the original design of the Buffalo nickel.
The reverse (tails) design is a representation of an American buffalo (also known as a bison).
