About Pilgrim Tercentenary Silver Half Dollars
To celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth, Massachusetts, Congress authorized the Pilgrim Tercentenary Half Dollar. The commemorative coins were issued with two different dates, setting a precedent that would be followed by future issues.

The obverse of the Pilgrim Half Dollar features a depiction of Governor William Bradford holding a Bible. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, PILGRIM HALF DOLLAR, IN GOD WE TRUST and 1921. Pieces minted in 1920 do not carry a date on the obverse.

The reverse of the coin features the Mayflower, the ship which carried the Pilgrims to Plymouth. Inscriptions read PILGRIM TERCENTENARY CELEBRATION and 1620-1920. Both the obverse and reverse were designed by Boston sculptor Cyrus E. Dallin based on sketches provided by the Pilgrim Tercentenary Commission.

About Early Commemorative Coins

Early Commemorative Coins were issued between the years 1892 and 1954 and have included primarily silver half dollars and gold dollars. Over the years additional denominations have been used including the silver quarter, silver dollar, several gold quarter eagles and one $50 gold piece. In total there were 50 different Silver Commemorative coin designs and 9 different Gold Commemorative coin designs. Each issue was typically authorized by an act of Congress which provided a specific maximum or minimum mintage requirement. Because legislation often did not specify otherwise, some Commemorative coin issues were produced in multiple years or struck at multiple mints.
