US Gold $1 Liberty Head Dollar represents the first series for the smallest gold denomination ever produced by the United States Mint. The authorization for the denomination followed the discovery of gold in California, which had prompted Congress to expand the use of gold within the coinage system. They were minted from 1849 - 1854 and survived the Gold Reserve Act of 1934 which outlawed private ownership of gold in the United States.
