First Spouse $10 Gold Bullion Coins
The United States Mint's First Spouse gold bullion coins features a portrait on the obverse, and on the reverse a unique design symbolic of the spouses's life and work. In instances where a president held office without a first spouse, the coin bears "an obverse image emblematic of Liberty as depicted on a circulating coin of that era and a reverse image emblematic of themes of that President's life."
The United States Mint certifies that this coin was struck in accordance with legislation passed by Congress and signed by the President on December 22, 2005, as Public Law 109-145. This coin was produced by the Department of the Treasury, United States Mint. This coin is legal tender of the United States.
Coin Designs
The obverse (heads side) design features a portrait of Betty Ford.
The reverse (tails) design features the image of a young woman ascending a spiral staircase. This was intended to be representative of Mrs. Ford's openness and advocacy regarding addiction, breast cancer awareness, and the rights of women.
