In instances where a president held office without a first spouse, the coin bears "an obverse image emblematic of Liberty as depicted on a circulating coin of that era and a reverse image emblematic of themes of that President's life."
The United States Mint certifies that this coin was struck in accordance with legislation passed by Congress and signed by the President on December 22, 2005, as Public Law 109-145. This coin was produced by the Department of the Treasury, United States Mint. This coin is legal tender of the United States.
